During the late 19th and the 20th century Modernism’s occulture and the art scene were deeply intertwined. This project explores Surrealism’s and other avant-garde movements’ fascination for the magical and esoteric, as well as the affordances of a mediumistic artist practice for female artists in particular, such as Hilma af Klint. The edited volume Surrealism and the Tarot: A Love Story, a deep dive into the surrealists’ play with and design of tarot cards throughout the twentieth century (19 chapters), will come out in October 2025.
