De Toekomst in Kaarten: Surrealisme, Spel en Tarot / March 2025

Tessel Bauduin delivered a public lecture at the Museum Catharijnaconvent in Utrecht, 21 March 2025

In the early years of Surrealism, artists experimented with playing cards and tarot cards, initially for aesthetic reasons, but soon also for their esoteric and psychological value. In this lecture, Dr. Tessel M. Bauduin will discuss the role of cards in Surrealism from 1924 to the present, from personal development to resistance against the Nazi regime. Surrealists such as Leonora Carrington, Ithell Colquhoun, and Salvador Dalí designed tarot decks and individual cards, playing with chance, making predictions, and gaining psychological insights.
